I have been working on this project for about a month now. It’s for my portfolio class. Assignment: create a book cover and two interior illustrations. I chose to illustrate "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller.
For those who are unfamiliar with this work, it is a play based on true events about the Salem witch trials. Many people were falsely accused and hanged. Partially due to mob mentality, fear, etc - just read it if you haven’t.
The first image is of Abigail Williams, the victims hanging from her arms, and is the cover image.
The second image is inspired by the quote from Mary Warren, “It’s God’s work we do.” It depicts a group of the young Puritan girls who were (falsely) accusing many of the townspeople of doing the Devil’s work.
The last image is of John Proctor and Elizabeth Proctor sharing their final conversation before John is eventually hanged.
All three are done in scratchboard. This is my first time using scratchboard for a “big” project. Well, really, it’s my first time using scratchboard for anything at all. A good medium, in my book.
Prints are available here.
